Checkmate has been a very popular WordPress theme with thousands of users worldwide. Now it is has been made even better. I’ve learned a thing or two from the users of Checkmate, listened to the feature requests and I’ve decided it is time to release Checkmate 2.0. Checkmate 2.0 is built on the original version of Checkmate, but could almost be considered a completely new theme.
The interface has gotten a huge and much needed update. The layout is still simple and clean but now is more polished and modern. Customizing the CSS and the look of theme is even better, the entire site was coded with the end user customizing the site in mind.

Theme Options
There has been a total redesign of the theme options page, and also new theme options to make customizing Checkmate even easier. Checkmate 2.0 has the ability to automatically detect uploads for CSS, logos, and backgrounds, which can easily be changed via the theme options page.
Layout Options
I mentioned the layout has been updated, well now it is also more flexible. Several users wanted a true 3 column layout(columns on each side of the content), now this is possible along with a single right column, a split right column, or a combo right column. All this is controlled using theme options and widget areas, no code editing!
Ad Management
Ad management remains in Checkmate 2.0 unchanged. It is the same simple and flexible widget and theme options combination which gives you a quick and easy way to get ads on your theme.
Support
Support for Checkmate has always been a strong point and something I’ve strove to provide the best support a free theme offers. Alas WordPress comments and email aren’t the best solution, so all support will now be handled via Tender. Where you can ask questions, read documentation, and contribute to discussions.

Checkmate already had a big feature list, now it is even bigger:

This seams to be a great, great theme adn with many options. May I ask you how I can change the with of the text area to 500px and not to affect the rest of the theme?

Vasile,
You’ll need to create your own css file and edit the blog and feature classes.

Thank you for your great theme!
But,Checkmate2 Doesn’t support Threaded Comments?

SurDark,
Not yet, WordPress 2.7 got released just after the completion of the theme and testing. Honestly I didn’t expect it to be out so soon.
Check this thread at tenderapp for updates to 2.7 functionality. It will be coming soon.

I’ve looked at over 100 wordpress themes and this seemed to be the most promising. I’m installing it on my website this weekend. Thanks Curtis for creating it :) You rock man!

Awesome job, just love this theme!
I did make a couple of changes in the style.css file to suit my needs…
One thing I noticed though is that the sticky function doesn’t work, hope you’ll fix that soon.
Keep up the good work!

Just a heads up, Checkmate has been updated to include threaded comments, now uses the post_class function, will automatically check for updates, and other minor changes.

Great theme man!!!

Yeah, seems if you have a left sidebar widget, the theme goes wacky if you are in three column mode. Going to two columns it works fine. Weird.

The great theme i need
Thank you

ericdano,
What do you mean “goes wacky”?
17th Jan 2009
I mean, when I had the theme in 3 column mode, and went to an article, I’d get a huge long page with one totally unrelated story/article………getting rid of all the widgets would make it fine, but if you just had even ONE widget on the left it would get all messed up.

ericdano,
I haven’t been able to reproduce that, and I can’t really think of anything that would cause that when two column works fine. If you want 3 column let me know and I’ll try to figure out what is causing the problem.
If anyone else experiences this let me know also.

vidyabhushan,
What version of WordPress are you on? And does this happen no matter which widgets are in the left sidebar?
I have not been able to reproduce this problem yet, but you are the third person to have it.

Hey, great theme. looks great, and easy to use.!
2nd Feb 2009
Is it me or does the ‘comment’ widget also include trackbacks? Anyway to exclude these?
7th Feb 2009
Yes I think it does include trackbacks, I’m not aware of anyway not to include them since it is part of the wordpress core. I’m sure there is a plugin that will do that though.

Great theme but have been having real problems trying to add more then one welcome box widget it is also making my text widgets box go away. now it says I have 3 widgets in the top sidebar but its only showing 2. Using wordpress 2.7.1
30th Apr 2009
D Elf,
I haven’t seen this problem before. Is the conflict with the second welcome box and the first text widget? It sounds like the second welcome box widget is getting named wrong causing a conflict.(theme problem, not what you are naming it)
